Chapter Eight

There had been peace on the island for nearly a month now.

Erik would not chalk that up to his own restraint, however, or Jack’s—no, it was that both men seemed to be doing well avoiding one another.

That the bear-shifter hadn’t left yet surprised Erik. Addie herself said she expected him to go, even with what was out there. Hunters, Deddeh—both would be preferrable to staying on the island with his nemesis, she thought.

But Erik understood: Jack knew he was dying. Painfully.

He probably wanted to watch.

As Jack’s injuries healed, he took up working with the others around the island. Repairs were needed on the house’s exterior after winter storms and as the ground thawed, there were plans to put together new boxed planters for the gardens that would eventually help to feed everyone. Apparently, according to Naliah, he’d been making himself useful, and had a good rapport with most of the others. He kept his distance but he was a good worker, polite though not friendly.

Erik had never been one for paranoia, other than what was necessary as he was growing up to try to keep ahead of forces that wanted him dead. But he’d grown more and more obsessed with what Jack might be planning.

Because he had to be planning something.

Get Erik into a fight in the hopes Addie would kick him off the island, so he’d spend his last days alone? Maybe. Addie had insisted Jack wouldn’t go after their daughters, and while killing babies didn’t seem his style, a lot changed in ten years. Especially after everything Jack had been through, and what he’d lost.

Erik stood in the bedroom window looking outside at the grim gray afternoon. Snow had turned to rain this week, soaking the ground and melting the last of the snow. Spring hadn’t quite taken hold yet but buds were starting on the trees, the sweet scent of growth filling the air. There were three of them working on the raised planters today with wood brought from the mainland in one of Naliah’s trips, Jack among them, hammering posts into place and listening to Murphy’s direction. He had to know Erik was watching but he didn’t look up once, the bear-shifter focusing solely on his tasks.

Maybe all Jack had really wanted was to get in Erik’s head. If that was his intent, well, mission fucking accomplished.

“Please close the damn curtains and get some rest.”

He didn’t need to turn to picture Addie staring at him from the doorway, arms crossed at her abdomen and brows raised challenge. Despite the sight of Jack below, Erik grinned faintly at that mental picture of her.

“Make me,” he said.

She snorted a laugh and then her soft steps sounded on the hardwood. She paused nearby, just out of view, by the bassinet where she checked on the sleeping babies. Both girls were growing quickly and they’d need a second bassinet soon. At least he knew how to put them together now and it shouldn’t take as long as the first one did.
